Is This House Possessed?

Straight Talk

The Question

We bought a house 5 years ago. The previous owner killed himself in the living room. My husband is 39 years old and he got bladder cancer soon after we moved in. I am 40 years old and I developed heart and lung disease last year and I am sick all the time. Our only child got West Nile virus last year; we thought she got over it, but now she has Spinal Stenosis and a herniated disc. She is almost 11 years old. All of this happened since we moved in this house. Is this house possessed?

Can a house be possessed? (Part 1)

With all that has happened you would think so wouldn’t you? Yet, is it actually possible for a house to be “possessed”? Possession means control, ownership and implies legal rights to occupy. When a demonic spirit possesses a human being their free will is impinged; they often don’t have total control of themselves or their actions.

This can be seen in the gospels in the cases where Jesus cast out demons. For instance, the demoniac from the country of Gerasenes had to be “bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard; and yet he would burst his fetters and be driven by the demon into the desert” (Luke 8:29). After Jesus freed him he was found “sitting down at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind” (Verse 35).

A house is a little different in that it has no free will and never had any part in giving permission to be occupied. I mention this distinction for a reason. Demonic forces can certainly occupy a house, but the good news is that they are easier to kick out than if a person is involved. Therefore, if your house has a problem you should be able to bless it and reverse the curse and end any history of infestation that has been there. Please see How to Bless Your House for more specific information.

Your own case (Part 2)

Since you have moved into your house you have certainly been under attack. I don’t think there is any doubt about that. We really don’t have a way of knowing though for sure whether this is associated with the house itself or something else. If you moved out and everything went right suddenly your suspicions could be confirmed.

At its root, all sickness and disease comes as a result of the curse the whole world has been under since Adam and Eve rebelled in the Garden of Eden. The devil is directly behind many illnesses but some are just part of the human condition since the fall. Sometimes it is very hard to understand the difference and in your case I can’t pretend to know. I can only imagine how worn down you must be after these long and repeated trials.

When Jesus walked the earth, He concentrated more on solutions than problems. Usually He just healed people without saying what caused the condition originally. I’m sure that behind your question, the real question is WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT ALL THIS?

You can do several things in addition to blessing your house and kicking out any demons that gained access any time in the past.

–Is your relationship with the Lord in good order? Have you and your family members received Christ as savior? Are you trusting in the power of the blood of Jesus which dethroned Satan and reversed every curse? Fight for every bit of it!

–Have you forgiven all your enemies? “For if you forgive men for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions” (Matthew 6:14-15). Don’t let unforgiveness play any part in granting demonic inroads into your life.

–Seek healing prayer through your church. Follow the advice of James: “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him” (James 5:14-15).

A time will certainly come when this long trial will be behind you. When you get to the other side of it you may be seasoned and mature in a way you didn’t imagine. Trust in the Lord and hold fast to this: “For Thou hast been a refuge for me, a tower of strength against the enemy. Let me dwell in Thy tent forever; let me take refuge in the shelter of Thy wings” (Psalms 61:3).
