I would like to get to know my angel and have a close relationship. I realize they are not my masters, Jesus is. I am a born-again, spirit-filled Christian. I go to a non-denominational multi-cultural church. There is a group meeting in my town that helps people practice bringing out their angel—the one God has assigned to them. Should I join this kind of group or what do you think about this type of group?

I have to be very honest and tell you that even without knowing a lot about this group I have a big red flag about you joining up with them. You mention that you realize angels are not your masters, Jesus is. But how likely is it that such a group was formed with the same thinking? Let me explain why.

Angels are referred to in the Bible (both Old and New Testament) around 300 times depending on your translation. They have many different functions from announcing things, carrying out judgments for God, to protecting people and warring in heavenly battles. While there is an abundance of talk about angels, they are always mentioned as part of a story about something else: they are never the story themselves.

We may each have a guardian angel assigned to us either during certain times or permanently but that assignment is from God. “For He will give His angels charge concerning you, to guard you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:11) They report to Him, not us. We are never told to handle our angel, direct our angel or communicate with our angel. It’s probably like the Secret Service agents assigned to the President; they keep watch and then stay out of the way. Their purpose is never to be front and center and the President doesn’t need to chat with them all day.

A group dedicated to getting into contact with angels puts them front and center. This kind of a group probably elevates angels to an inappropriate status at the very least. They may not hold Jesus in the esteem He demands as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. If they did they would form a group around worship of Him and not interest in His angelic created beings.

Ask someone in the group who Jesus is and you may get such things as “Ascended Master” or “Great Prophet.” Those type answers will cue you that this is really a New Age group to steer clear of. Even if they do acknowledge who Jesus is then aren’t their priorities off base?

I don’t wish to put a damper on any interest you may have in the subject of angels. Certainly they are fascinating beings. Study them in your Bible if you want. Should God ever choose to have you encounter an angel that’s icing on the cake. It must be truly awesome to be in the presence of one because John the Apostle had to be told twice in the book of Revelation not to fall at their feet and worship. (Revelation 19:10 and 22:8) That alone should tell us how careful we all need to be.
