How do we invest in eternity?

Investment Options (Part 1)

I love this question because the truth is, we CAN invest in eternity. Most people are just worried about “getting” there but that is small minded. Since eternity is going to be so long, why not spend more time on preparing for the very best heaven we can have?

Wait a minute. Aren’t we all going to have the same heaven? Won’t we feel “less” if someone else has “more”? Heaven will not be the same for everyone. Yet, we won’t feel slighted if the next saint has more than us. Here’s why: we will each have as much as we can hold. We will be full to our own brim with all the riches that “eye has not seen and ear has not heard” (1 Corinthians 2:9) which God is preparing for us in heaven.

The thing is, what we do on earth is creating the size container we will each have to be filled by God. I want mine to be as big as possible and it sounds from your question that you do too. Scripture tells us: “If any man’s work which he has built upon it remains, he shall receive a reward.” (1 Corinthians 3:14)

Our works upon earth shall be tested by fire and “If any man’s work is burned up, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as through fire.” (Verse 16) Which are the works that will produce a reward?

One work for sure is total surrender. “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, shall receive many times as much, and shall inherit eternal life.” (Matthew 19:29) Another work is faithful handling of what God places in our hands now. “‘Well done, good and faithful slave; you were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things, enter into the joy of your master.'” (Matthew 25:21)

How can we invest in eternity? We can live by kingdom principles instead of worldly principles. This is hard and is only possible when we choose to look up and beyond our short time on earth to an eternal perspective. We must realize and care that “our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20) and we must truly desire to “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” (Matthew 6:20)

The investment will be worth it. The pay off will be BIG!
