Which Are You? – Mark 16:15

Wake Up Call

“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” Edith Wharton

A few days ago I opened a book and found a sticky note with that quote written on it and it was not in my handwriting. I have no idea how I got it or who wrote it but I’m glad I happened upon it. It reminds me that there is more than one way to successfully tell people the good news about Jesus.

As Christians we are commanded to; “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15) I believe in following that command but as far as spiritual gifts; evangelism isn’t mine. That means I’m not the type to knock on doors and pass out Bible tracts or approach strangers and ask them if they know where they are going when they die.

There are people who are so comfortable and good at that type of evangelism that they haven’t a clue why everyone else isn’t. When I am around those with the gift of evangelism, I always feel slightly guilty. Like I’m not doing enough; like I’m not bold enough. But then this quote reminds that maybe I can be the mirror.

Being the mirror means reflecting Jesus. By becoming more like him I make it easier for people who are around me to see him and maybe want to know him for themselves. A major part really comes down to practicing what I preach. Love, of course, is the center of it all.

Yes, we are all called to help evangelize the whole world. To be the candle or the mirror. Which are you?
