Be Single Minded – Isaiah 58:3

Wake Up Call

What does it mean to be double minded? In the book of James it says, ”let not that man expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” (James 1:7-8)

I think a kind of double-mindedness was displayed back in Isaiah’s time. The people sought God’s nearness and they wanted just decisions from him. They fasted and humbled themselves but complained that God didn’t seem to care about all that good stuff. ”Why have we humbled ourselves and Thou dost not notice?” (Isaiah 58:3)

God tells them why. ”Behold, on the day of your fast you find your desire, and drive hard all your workers.” They were living double lives. He goes on to tell them the kind of fast that would matter. ”Is this not the fast which I choose, to loosen the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free and break every yoke?” (Verse 6)

So you can’t just give God lip service, huh? It’s not okay to sing praises on Sunday and beat your spouse on Monday? You can’t pay your tithe when the offering plate passes and turn around and cheat on your income tax? You can’t have one mind to serve God and another mind to serve your flesh ‘ a double mind?

Luke 10:27 says, ”You shall love the Lord your God will ALL your heart, and with ALL your soul, and with ALL your strength, and with ALL your mind; and your neighbor as your self.” Ah, now that’s what I call SINGLE-minded.
