Rot – Proverbs 10:6

Wake Up Call

What ever happened to “the end doesn’t justify the means”? Has that wise adage been tossed in the re-cycle bin only to re-appear as “It’s all about me”? It would seem so based on a recent news story about what happened in Richmond, Virginia the other day.

A local school district was replacing 1,000 laptops and wanted to make the used ones available to county residents for the fabulous price of $50. People lined up as early as 4:30 AM to get one. What ensued at 7:00 AM when the gate opened can only be viewed as panic and stampede.

Here’s what part of the CNN.com story says happened: “People threw themselves forward, screaming and pushing each other. A little girl’s stroller was crushed in the stampede. Witnesses said an elderly man was thrown to the pavement, and someone in a car tried to drive his way through the crowd.”

That’s bad and you would think that those who participated in the chaos would quietly slink back home fearing exposure. Not so to one man who freely gave his name to a reporter and declared proudly; “I took my chair here and I threw it over my shoulder and I went, ‘Bam.'” He had deliberately brought a chair with him to beat people back who might try to cut in front of him.

Maybe our friend with the new used laptop never heard of this: “Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked. The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot” (Proverbs 10:6-7). Long after his laptop rots, he may have another kind of rot to deal with.
