Quite a Legacy – Matthew 26:7

Wake Up Call

There is a woman who is famous in the Bible and yet we do not even know her name. She approached Jesus with “an alabaster vial of very costly perfume, and she poured it upon His head as He reclined at table.” (Matthew 26:7)

The disciples, looking at things from a practical and natural outlook, thought her extravagance was a big waste. They complained that if she wanted to donate the perfume, it could have been sold for a high price and the money could have been given to the poor. Yes, that’s true, but they missed the point.

The woman was looking at things from a spiritual outlook. She recognized the unfathomable riches of God being in their midst and knew he deserved no less than the gift of her most costly possession. It was probably her dowry. What she really poured out upon Jesus was her whole heart of love.

That’s exactly what the Lord was looking for as he went about his ministry on earth. By the way, he looks for the same thing today. He wanted to drive home his point by telling his disciples – and us – what he thought of her deed. “Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done shall also be spoken of in memory of her.”(Matthew 26:13)

We may not know her name but she’s famous nonetheless. WOW! That’s quite a legacy!
