A Small Detail – Luke 22:15

Wake Up Call

The last supper that Jesus had with his close intimate followers was very well planned. He had the room in the house in mind and had a very specific way to reserve it. (Luke 22:10-12) No one was invited except the twelve – no Pharisees or general public — not his mother or any of the other traveling companions or disciples. He wanted everything just right. He told them; “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” (Luke 22:15)

But did he forget one tiny little detail? Where was the servant who would wash all their feet when they entered the Passover room from the dusty road? That would be fully expected and yet there was no one there to greet them at the door. How could he have missed it?

Actually, that detail was planned most of all. HE would wash their feet himself. “Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.” (John 13:5) The significance was not lost on them – Peter even resisted it at first.

Jesus had a big lesson about essentials in mind for the twelve and those who would follow him afterward in that intimate supper relationship. “If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.” (John 13:14)

Don’t ever forget that detail!
