Don’t Go It Alone – Ecclesiastes 4:9

Wake Up Call

When I first bought my house, some friends swooped down and blessed me beyond my wildest dreams. They painted and wallpapered all my rooms so that when I moved in everything would be fresh and wonderful. It wasn’t that they didn’t have anything else to do; their time was very valuable. It was a sacrifice of love and I’ll never forget it.

The Bible says; “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). Through the years I’ve appreciated innumerable times when friends have helped to lift me up and share my burden.

The passage goes on to say; “But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up” (Verse 10b). Why is he alone? Some people are afraid to depend on others. Some don’t want to get close enough for anyone to see that they have fallen down. Some are too selfish to give so they figure they better not take either.

This is a mistake. We are designed by God to be interdependent. Friendship is one of God’s greatest gifts and we should lock in to as many friends as we can. When we have a friend, part of our job duty is to watch them carefully. We need to be there if they fall. We also need to be willing to be picked up if we fall.

Life’s road can get pretty bumpy. Don’t go it alone.
