Curses or Blessings? – Exodus 20:5

Wake Up Call

If there is a persistent, consistent problem in you or your family, you may be dealing with a “generational curse.” It may sound like hooey but the Bible has an explanation. “I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments” (Exodus 20:5).

Sin opens a door to a curse that can be handed down. We all know about things that “run in families.” Diseases, alcoholism, anger, sexual sins – they often attract to some families like magnets. I know a family that seems to continually operate in poverty and I suspect that a generational curse is involved.

You do not have to put up with it. Sin may have been introduced but Jesus provided the antidote. If you are a Christian remember this: “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us” (Galatians 3:13). What He bore through the shedding of His blood, we do not have to.

Are there issues in your family that may have resulted from someone else’s sin? Repent on behalf of them even if you don’t know for sure who they are. Apply the blood of Jesus to that curse. Examine your own life to make sure you are not passing on any curses to the next generation.

Will your family suffer curses or inherit blessings? Your choice.
