The Land of the Living – Psalm 27:13

Wake Up Call

A pastor that I once sat under in a church I attended told this story. His eight year old son was experimenting with fire in the back yard and set himself ablaze accidentally causing severe burns over his face and chest. He was rushed to the hospital and his chance of survival was minimal. When the pastor saw his son after the accident his head was swollen bigger than a basketball. Things looked bad.

It was touch and go for a couple of days and the doctors could not offer much hope. The pastor prayed with every kind of prayer he knew to pray and his whole church prayed with him. Yet, he wondered, will my son survive or will this be the case of the healing coming in heaven? He felt he needed to know and kept asking God; will my son live or die?

As he was pacing the hallway, a Lutheran pastor who was in the hospital approached him and said that he had also been praying for the son. He felt that God had given him this scripture regarding the situation: “I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living” (Psalm 27:13). It was the words, “in the land of the living” that burned like fire into my pastor’s heart. And then he KNEW that his son would live, and so he did.

Do you believe you will see the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living? Not in the sweet by and by, not from the vantage point of eternity only, but NOW — in the physical world we live in during our time on earth. Everything that God has for us is not always for “later.” God has blessings, prosperity, healing, fullness, reward, and much more for us in this land of the living. Believe in the Lord’s goodness. Don’t lose heart. God has good things planned for you.
