The Bow of Hope

Wake Up Call

I love rainbows; seeing one excites me and brings me great hope. Last night I got off the phone with my daughter but then she called back within about five minutes. “Guess what I’m looking at Mom?” Right out from her porch was an enormous full rainbow which reached end to end into the earth. I guess she feels the same way I do!

You know where rainbows come from don’t you? It was after the flood which destroyed the whole earth. Noah and his family left the ark where God had protected them. Can you imagine how lonely you would feel if everyone on earth was destroyed and you were the last people left? So God planted a great big rainbow in the sky.

The Lord made a covenant, not just with Noah but with every person that would ever live on earth. That includes you and me. About the bow he said; “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.” (Genesis 9:17) A rainbow reminds us of our security in God.

Never again would God destroy the earth by water. This is what we can expect: “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease.” (Genesis 8:22) Noah probably appreciated the covenant more than we can understand. We take the seasons and cycles for granted because they have always proven true. And they always will.

Next time you have the privilege of seeing a rainbow, smile and offer thanks to God for his wonderful bow of hope.
