Healing Words – Proverbs 12:18

Wake Up Call

“There is one who speaks rashly, like a piercing sword; but the tongue of the wise brings healing” (Proverbs 12:18 – HCSB). Ouch! I’ve had words pierce me like a sword before, have you?

Once while walking my dogs in my neighborhood I had a lady spew some words on me so harshly they sting to this day, and the incident was several years ago. I’ve also had words bring healing to me and I know for sure which way I would rather have it. Give me the wise words anytime.

Now, what about me and my words to others? I hate to admit it but I’ve been responsible at times for some deep cutting words. How often I’ve wished I could hit a rewind button on what just came out of my mouth. Too late ‘ and then the sword has done its damage. I can only hope I’ve been responsible for more healing than hurting words in my lifetime.

I’m not sure I can claim my tongue is finally under perfect control but there is one helpful thing I’ve noticed. The ‘rash’ word is quick and the ‘wise’ word is usually slow. This is hard for people like me who are fast paced and who always have a ready answer.

Far better to pause before speaking. Far better to take just a moment to judge what is about to pop forth. Far better that words provide a bandage to the listener than cause them to need one.
