Keep On Working – John 9:4

Wake Up Call

I’m spending time reading though the gospels now to get a sense of what Jesus was doing in the time leading up to his death on the cross. What was he doing the week before? What was he doing on Monday, on Tuesday, etc.? He knew what was coming so you would think that would affect him significantly.

There is no day by day breakdown in Matthew, Mark, Luke or John but here is what I noticed. He made what is called his triumphant entry into Jerusalem (what we celebrate now as Palm Sunday) but didn’t bask in the praise too long. Immediately upon arrival in the city he went to the temple and drove out the money changers.

When the blind and lame were brought to him afterward in the temple, he healed them. He organized the celebration of the Passover meal with his disciples knowing it would be their last together. He challenged the scribes and Pharisees in their “religious” thinking and they were the ones who would plot his death.

He continued to tell parables and teach at every possible chance. He prophesied about the coming temple destruction and the signs to watch for in the future that would signal the end of the age of grace. He graciously received the woman who poured the costly spikenard oil over his head during supper in the house of Simon the leper. He knew the oil was anointing his body for burial beforehand and praised the woman for doing what she could.

What I notice is that he continued with his mission, never deviating or faltering. He pressed on. If I knew I was going to die in one week, I can’t image myself doing the same thing, can you? Jesus said; “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.” (John 9:4)

The truth is, none of us know whether we have one week or one year or one decade left. As long as it’s still day; keep on working.
