Wake Up Call

You know how it is when you meet someone you really like for the first time. There is no baggage in the relationship yet and you are on your best behavior. You give the benefit of the doubt and you love freely without reserve. Love becomes harder with the passage of time because all the flaws and warts of the other person are exposed.

God’s love for us doesn’t become harder for him in the same way. The truth of that has been impacting me as I’ve been listening to one of the songs on Sanctus Real’s CD, “The Face of Love.” The song is “Eloquent” and sets the stage by saying; “I am difficult, argumentative – I’m as thick skulled as the dinosaur bones on a display – in a glass case – I can’t believe you haven’t run away.”

Then come the lyrics which really nail God’s way of loving us. “It must be different through your eyes – because you look at me like it’s the first time that you’ve ever seen my face.” We all wonder how anyone could love us if they saw deep down to all the “yuck” we have buried in our heart. Yet there is one who does!

Imagine God loving you every minute like it is the first time he has ever seen your face. His love never growing dim, never strained, never tempered or reserved. Maybe if we could get that deep enough inside ourselves we could start to see each other that way too. Then we would understand this: “love covers a multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:8)
