Delivering Light – Matthew 6:23

Wake Up Call

I have a close relative who is living inside a cult, totally deceived. She has lived this life for over thirty years and is absolutely clueless that little by little, inch by inch, her freedom has dwindled to nothing. Lately I tried to enter into a dialog, hoping that there might be something I could say which would be thought provoking.

At first she responded but then I got too close to some core issues. She decided she wants to end the correspondence. Guess what she told me? She said I should; “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” She has no idea that she was quoting the Bible. She just wants me to refrain from any criticism of her “religion.” Too scary for her.

The whole thing reminds me of something Jesus said about spiritual blindness. “But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” (Matthew 6:23) For my poor relative, the darkness is very great.

She may be living in a darkroom but I have a way of delivering light to her even if she refuses to take my letters. Prayer is like a light switch on the wall and every time I pray it throws the switch to “ON”. Prayer is not limited by time or space. Prayer goes through mountains, over obstacles and straight to the heart of the need.

I was probably foolish to use logic to begin with – her mind is closed to that. But prayer? That’s now my preferred way of delivering the light!
