Julie’s House – Isaiah 55:9

Wake Up Call

Don’t you just love those perfect storybook endings about God’s wonderful faithfulness where everything goes like clockwork? My friend Julie has such a story. She needed to sell her house at a time when the housing market was at an all time low. Nothing was selling. She had great confidence, however, that God was prompting her to move and she found just the right property for her next home.

All around her neighborhood houses were listed with real estate companies that had been on the market for several months. Deciding to sell her home “By Owner”, she put a small cardboard sign in her front window that simply said; “House for Sale.” Within two weeks a buyer approached and bought it. I visited her a couple of months after she was happily in her new house and we delighted together in the fabulous way God had put it all together.

Yes, God did it that way – THAT time. But he doesn’t always slide everything into place that same way. When things go harder, it doesn’t necessarily mean you missed his will or his plan. I know Julie quite well and there are other areas in her life where waiting and struggle occurred even when she was just as convinced she was in the center of God’s will.

Sometimes as Christians we get stuck into patterns of expectation with God. We put words in his mouth and assume how he will act. We say; “Well God would never let this or that happen” or “God always does such and such.” Maybe we say that because it has been our experience so far. But the time will usually come when God does things in our life totally contrary to the way he has done them “so far.” Your surprise and disappointment should not cause you to lose faith in your ability to hear from him.

One thing I can guarantee to you about God is that you can’t completely figure him out. The next time you wonder if you have really missed it remember this; “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9)
