Justice…In the End – Psalm 73:12

Wake Up Call

I think one of the hardest things to understand – and to live with, is when we see evil triumph over good. There is a basic and very deep seated desire for justice in each one of us. We want the guys with the white hats to always win. I grew up in a time when, at least in the movies and on TV, that always happened.

Good and evil were always clearly defined and there were very few gray areas. At the end of a movie or TV drama the right always prevailed no matter how much suffering and injustice the protagonists had put up with earlier in the plot. Like many of us, I got used to thinking that was “real” life.

Eventually, we see murders that are not solved, reputations lost through gossip, incompetent people promoted, liars believed, and cheaters win. Of course, it really hits home when injustice happens to US. We just can’t believe it at first. Surely things will get turned around…except sometimes they don’t. How can we handle this?

There was a Psalmist in the Old Testament who had the same question. In The Message, Psalm 73:12-14 is paraphrased this way:

“What’s going on here? Is God out to lunch? Nobody’s tending the store. The wicked get by with everything; They have it made, piling up riches. I’ve been stupid to play by the rules; what has it gotten me? A long run of bad luck, that’s what- a slap in the face every time I walk out the door.”

The answer lies in our vantage point. From our own little corner of the world injustice makes no sense. “No fair” echo’s in our heart. We have to climb up onto the throne of God and sit awhile with Him to see it a different way. The psalm writer continues in verses 16 and 17 (and this is from the New King James Version); “When I thought how to understand this, it was too painful for me-Until I went into the sanctuary of God; Then I understood their end.”

Every single injustice on earth is temporary and short lived. No one gets away with it. Not in the long run. Not in eternity. Take comfort and confidence in knowing that God will make it right. He may still do so on this earth but if not now, He will make it right in the end.
