Decide Beforehand

Wake Up Call

You have to be in a pretty sad condition to say: “My spirit is broken, my days are extinguished, the grave is ready for me”(Job 17:1). That was Job speaking to his friends. Few of us have ever had the adversity that Job experienced though there may be some who have come pretty close.

Do you know what happened to him? Messengers came to him one after the other to report his livestock, possessions and servants were stolen and killed. The final messenger reported that all of his children were killed when the house they were in collapsed. That is not the end. Job lost his health when he was struck “with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head” (Job 2:7).

Having been blessed and prospered by God up to this point in his life, Job’s adversity took him from a pinnacle to a pit. That probably made his troubles all the worse. It was not the way he was used to life.

I think the reason Job made it through without turning from God was because of the decision he made before any trouble came upon him. When he was first notified of his many disasters he said without hesitation; “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21).

Is your life relatively peaceful and blessed right now? Even so, each of us will experience some adversity along the line. A messenger will come with bad news. Our spirit may be broken and we may feel ready for the grave. How will you respond to God when everything falls apart? Decide beforehand.
