Thanks, I Needed That

Wake Up Call

Is your life in chaos? I’m defining chaos as events that spill out of any neat packages you’d like to contain them in and which defy your desire to bend them to your will. If you have more than one area of your life that fits that description you might find yourself calling it “catastrophic chaos.”

I’m facing some chaos myself right now. I can tell you that it is no fun. My mind goes around in circles trying to solve that which is not solvable. It doesn’t appear that there is any end in sight either.

Just yesterday I pulled back from another circular session with my brain going full tilt. I took a deep sigh and then a new thought struck me. I said to myself: “Sometimes it’s good when everything IS in chaos … then it’s not such a stretch to realize you can do nothing on your own.”

If you’re an independent take-charge sort of person (and that would be me), you often think you are in control. Of course that’s not really true; it’s only a silly illusion we often labor under. Chaos has a way of bursting that bubble and that is actually a very good thing.

We all know the scripture; “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13) It’s a great one to say but I think I only really mean it when I truly have tried and failed at all my own devices.

God snaps me out of thinking I can control my life. He’s like the guy who gives a quick hard slap to someone in hysterics. I’m like the slapped one who finally comes to my senses and replies: “Thanks, I needed that!”
