Beggars All – John 6:48

Wake Up Call

I was told that a theologian from a third world country once said; “We are just beggars showing other beggars where to find the bread.” The bread is Jesus — he told us outright: “I am the bread of life” (John 6:48)

It seems good to think of ourselves this way so we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We are on a level field with the rest of humanity; we aren’t better than all of them in case we found the bread a little sooner than they did.

I always appreciate an usher when I arrive in a dark theater. He shines his little flashlight on my ticket and knows right where my seat is and promptly shows me to it. He doesn’t think he is a rung above me because he has knowledge I don’t. Once his service is completed he moves on.

I wonder if some people reject the Gospel because it is presented to them in a self righteous, smug, I know more than you do kind of way. We don’t always act like the beggars we really are. Are we so full of bread we don’t remember hunger anymore?

When we share the Bread of Life with others, it’s worth remembering that we are really beggars all.
