Don’t You Care That I Am Perishing? – Mark 4:35

Wake Up Call

Are you in the midst of a big storm right now? And where is God even as we speak? Does he appear to be out to lunch, traveling in another country or maybe asleep on a pillow?

Jesus was literally asleep on a pillow one time when the disciples were in desperate need. They were in the middle of the sea at his suggestion. He said; “Let us cross over to the other side.” (Mark 4:35) So they all got in and began to row and Jesus went to the stern and fell asleep, exhausted.

A great windstorm arose which must have been a humdinger because these were seasoned sailors and even they were afraid when their boat started taking in water. They evidently thought this was the end of the line. They shook the Lord awake and give him their fearful little rebuke; “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” (Verse 38)

First Jesus spoke to the sea and the wind and told them to hush up and be still. Then he turned to his scared band of followers. “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” (Verse 40)

Think about it. What are the chances that they could have gone down in that storm with Jesus on board? Think now about your own storm. What are the chances that you will go down? Isn’t Jesus right in that boat with you?

You think he is asleep but he can call for peace and stillness at any time. Actually, why don’t YOU call for peace and stillness? Maybe that’s why he is asleep. Don’t make him ask you why you are so fearful and have no faith.
