As I was sorting through some old Bible study notes I found a piece of paper on which I had written: “A vision without a plan is a fantasy.” Did I come up with that or did I hear it somewhere?
At any rate, I mulled it over again and I think it’s still a pretty good statement. A vision can propel us to a higher level of life. A fantasy is all pie in the sky and daydreaming with no roots in reality. I’ve messed around with the fantasy stuff before and it always ends up disappointing. The plan is the defining activity to our outcome.
God had a vision for us and he also had a plan. “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son…” (Romans 8:29) He wanted us to become like Jesus so he sent his Son to be the perfect picture of how to live life and serve God.
Our best vision is to match God’s vision. If that’s so, what’s the plan to become more like Jesus every day? Here are three good ways: be like him in word, way and works.
Jesus knew the scriptures thoroughly and always used them to speak words of life and to combat the lies of the devil. We can plan to do that too. We can be like him in his ways by emulating his character. He was holy and we are called to be holy. Then the fun part is to follow him in his works. We do the deeds of Christ by healing the sick, delivering those demonically oppressed and preaching the good news to all creatures.
There’s a vision worthy of our attention and a plan worthy of our action!
