A Day Of Rest – Genesis 2:3

Wake Up Call

What ever happened to the Sabbath day, our day of rest? God himself instituted it. After He finished all of His creation work, he rested; “Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.” (Genesis 2:3)

Society used to honor that and Sunday was a day where everything pretty much ground to a halt. You needn’t bother trying to do any shopping, even for food, because almost all stores were closed. I remember that my mother did not allow even gardening or hand sewing on Sunday when I was young.

Now our culture has so changed that we cannot imagine not being able to pop into the grocery at any hour on any day of the week. Sunday is no different than any other day. Sports matches are often planned for Sunday mornings because all other slots are already taken.

Isn’t there a price to pay for no longer honoring God’s restful institution? If God Himself rested, how are we exempt? You might agree but wonder how in the world we can re-wind and go back to the way it once was. Maybe you can’t figure out how you could possibly give those 24 hours in Sunday for rest every week.

Think about it! Consider how you might at least pare down on Sundays yourself – maybe it will catch on once more. Aren’t you tired of not having a day of rest?
