Have you ever been given one of those “unlock codes” for a new piece of software? You have to key it in just right or the software won’t work. I got one the other day for a program but what a major production it was unlocking the software so it could work.
The user ID was 19 characters long followed by a 20 character serial number. The mixing of numbers and letters, upper and lower case, was so confusing I felt like I was dyslexic. It took me three tries before it finally said “Welcome” and began to install.
There are some mighty confused human beings walking around who feel that way about the possibility of having a relationship with God. In their estimation, if you don’t line up your life “just right” you will never be able to see God’s “Welcome” sign. Sometimes we contribute to their misconception by hitting them with a big unlock code of dos and don’ts.
I think about how easily and simply Jesus began relationships with his disciples. To Peter, Andrew and John he just said; “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19) No pre-conditions right off the bat.
Those first disciples didn’t do anything except; “They immediately left their nets and followed Him.” (Matthew 4:20) As the Lord continues to call out “Follow Me” to people all around us, we should let them know that the only unlock code they will need is simple obedience.
