Healing to the Bones – Proverbs 16:24

Wake Up Call

“Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never harm me.” This popular children’s ditty has been around forever it seems. Yet most of us realize it is really not true at all. Words can harm us MORE than any old sticks and stones. If we think back, we can probably still feel the sting of some hurtful words said years or decades ago.

On the other hand, the Bible says; “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones” (Proverbs 16:24). I believe that is literally true. Words of life bring deep health – even to the marrow of the bones. This should be enough to cause us to catch our own tongues before we hurl unkind words at anyone.

But what about those stinging words that are sitting inside our own bones already? Maybe they have been stewing a poison for quite some time. I have found that the best remedy to hurting words is TRUTH. One who has been told they are worthless can listen to these words: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). In fact the whole of Psalm 139 is definitely like a honeycomb.

God is always in the business of speaking the truth to us; speaking those things which build us up and bring healing to our innermost being. His words are sweet to our soul and health to our bones. Listen to them!
