ALL the Facts – Proverbs 18:13

Wake Up Call

I have a friend who is getting ready to make a major life changing decision. Right now it is in the percolating stage where all the possibilities are still swirling around but pretty soon it will be decision time.

Talking it over, he dropped this comment; “I’m not going to go ahead and do this just because it’s an open door. There must be something else to accompany that.” I think my friend shows a lot of wisdom.

Over time I have seen Christians make serious errors in judgment when they trusted the way everything seemed to fall together as being a sure sign it was from God. Afterward they were incredulous and struggled with trust and disappointment in the Lord. “How could God have let me make such a big mistake?”

It’s true that sometimes you can tell God’s will by open and closed doors. I always look for that myself. But other things should line up too. When God wants us to do something He has no problem giving us additional confirmation. Such things as peace, godly counsel, and practical considerations are a wise part of the decision making process.

The next time you are ready to make a major decision, don’t forget this: “What a shame-yes, how stupid!-to decide before knowing the facts” (Proverbs 18:13 TLB)!
