Fullness of Time – Matthew 1:1

Wake Up Call

Today I’m struck by a portion of scripture we usually skip or at least skim: the genealogy of Jesus. The book of Matthew starts off: “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” It goes on from there listing generation after generation of names until it says: “and to Jacob was born Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.” (Matthew 1:16)

Wow! We think we have a lot of preparation to do as we ready for the Christmas holiday each year. But what about Father God? He had the birth of Jesus in his mind right from the beginning. Still, he waited. “But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law.” (Galatians 4:4)

I realize God carefully selected each person in the lineage of Christ. None were born by accident and they did not marry by happenstance. Their progeny were children of destiny intended by God to prepare the way for the next generation until that fullness of time came.

Of course, at the time, probably not one of them had an inkling of just how important their life and times were. What a surprise to them from eternity when their name eventually showed up in Holy Scriptures.

Could it be that God has prepared your life in a similar way? Think about it as you contemplate Christ’s birth, especially during the month of December. Truly, he had your birth in mind right from the beginning too.
