Whatever

Wake Up Call

A few nights ago I sat with my teenage friend Gabe over coffee and we got to talking about his generation. He told me that they are being called the “whatever” generation. I asked why. Well, for instance, he said, many teens he knows claim they are Christians but they casually sleep around, drink, etc.

Always trying to probe the whys of behavior I said; “Do you think the church failed to teach right from wrong, do you think it’s because our society is so affluent, do you think they have never been properly challenged?” “No” he said, “it’s because they just don’t care.” Appalled, I asked how they would respond if someone asked how they reconciled their behavior with their beliefs. He said they would probably just shrug and say; “whatever.”

I needn’t be so shocked. Which generation since Adam and Eve has been without sin? And what is sin anyhow except rebellion and catering to our basest self and saying to God; I want my way over your way? Each generation will put their own spin on their excuse for sin. One more thing though; no generation will escape the consequences of their sin.

Here now is another “whatever” that any of us might consider when taking sin so casually; “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” (Galatians 6:7)
