Soul Music – 1 Samuel 16:23

Wake Up Call

After Saul lost God’s favor and anointing through disobedience, the Bible says that a distressing spirit troubled him. His servants suggested finding a man skillful at the harp to play for Saul when the evil spirit came upon him. Saul jumped at the idea and told them to search out such a person.

David was the man sent to Saul. The solution worked just as predicted by his servants. “And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him” (1 Samuel 16:23). David’s anointed music brought peace and relief to a troubled soul.

Isn’t music powerful? Have you ever noticed music’s effect on your mood? I used to let a particular radio station play as I went about my day until I finally noticed how melancholy it made me feel. Once I realized I switched stations. At that time in my life, things were melancholy enough!

If your soul is troubled right now, think about the music you are listening to. All music has an affect. Does yours help or hinder? Does it refresh or distress? I agree with Saul’s servants. Find some with the Spirit of God upon it and tune in. That would make the best soul music.
