Children in Captivity – Deuteronomy 28:41

Wake Up Call

Wouldn’t it be an unbearably grievous thing to see your children go into captivity? That was part of the curse God promised to His people if they chose not to “obey the Lord your God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes.”(Deuteronomy 28:15)

Regarding this particular part of the curse God told them: “You shall have sons and daughters but they shall not be yours, for they shall go into captivity.” (Verse 41) I wonder if a large number of parents are experiencing this today. I’m talking of spiritual captivity — as severe as being dragged off to another country.

Aren’t drugs a type of captivity? Isn’t rebellion? Aren’t we increasingly bringing up children without a firm footing of truth who navigate life through a moral quagmire?

I don’t mean to say this is the fault of every individual parent who has a wayward child. Unfortunately, society as a whole has stopped obeying God and observing all His commands and the fallout hits many innocent families. Still, parents should examine themselves to make sure they are not contributing to the curse of captivity.

A parent who secretly views pornography, has an affair on the side, cheats on taxes or even steals TV cable services is not just participating in personal sin. There may be consequences to the offspring too. On the other hand, the more closely the parent clings to God’s ways, the more insulated their children may be from society’s pollutants.

Let’s be very careful and observe God commands in every detail. Aren’t there already too many children in captivity?
