Worth The Trouble – John 17:21

Wake Up Call

Jesus prayed something to his Father right before his death that has never yet been answered. He said; “that they all may be one…that the world may believe that You sent Me.” (John 17:21) Before the Lord returns to earth once again this will happen but what stops it from happening now?

I was thinking about this lately when I sat in on a conversation that gave me a clue. One person expressed an opinion about a spiritual approach to something that I thought was dead wrong. I see things entirely different. We are both committed Christians but we hardly ever see eye to eye on anything.

My first impulse was to jump in and prove him wrong. I had to bite my tongue not to interrupt. The two of us don’t have much in common and I think it carries over into discussions on spiritual topics. The truth is I wanted my opinion to find favor with the group over his.

2 Timothy 2:23 says; “But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.” Hasn’t the church indulged in a myriad of foolish and ignorant disputes over the last two thousand years? Under the guise of maintaining doctrinal purity denominations end up in petty fights that keep Christians at odds.

Instead of generating strife, let’s concentrate on being ONE. I have to admit that this is especially hard for me. But if we all try to do it, maybe then we will see the Lord’s prayer answered in our lifetime. I think it would be worth the trouble, don’t you?
