Restore the Hearts

Wake Up Call

It saddens me to think of the broken condition of a large percentage of the men in our society. How often I hear adult children who speak about having fathers who were remote, uncommunicative, mean or abusive. We are told to call God, “Abba” – “Daddy.” Yet for many people that is not helpful since their own father wasn’t there for them. So, why would a heavenly father be any different?

Women have not helped the situation. It is a popular pastime to rag on men because they are “clueless, insensitive, selfish, unable to commit, absorbed in sports and immature.” There is a grain of truth to all this and men sense they deserve some of the put-downs. Yet they don’t know how to do “manhood” any different because they don’t know how to fix what is broken deep inside. Only God can.

I long for the day when this scripture is fulfilled: “And he (God) will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers.” (Malachi 4:6) I hope it happens in my lifetime because it has never been needed more. What do you think that would look like?

If we had emotionally healthy men we would have healthy children who would not need to sit in counseling sessions as adults because of damage done to them when they were little. Fidelity would go way up and divorce would go way down. Women would start singing a different tune when they saw maturity and strength and commitment in their fathers and husbands.

Here is my prayer. I invite you to join me: “Restore the hearts, O Lord!”
