Consequences – Romans 6:23

Wake Up Call

“I’ll be good, I’ll be good.” That was my desperate chant as a child when I could see I had finally gone too far and my mother was headed to the maple tree for a switch. It was all about misbehavior and consequences and of course I was hoping to continue the one and avoid the other.

Usually, whether I got my deserved consequences or not, I would live to misbehave another day. It’s a good thing childhood lasts long enough for lessons to be repeated over and over. Hopefully, finally by adulthood, we catch on and gain enough maturity to pass proper behavior lessons on to our own children.

Even as an adult though, have you ever cried, “I’ll be good” to God? You go down a road you know you shouldn’t and end up with consequences you don’t want. In this case let’s not pretend its misbehavior; it’s simply called SIN. Uh oh! The Bible says; “For the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23) Wow! That’s pretty big consequences!

You may have natural consequences to go through in life if you sin (like prison time for murder or robbery) but there is a way of avoiding the spiritual wages. The way to do so is very straightforward: CONFESS! 1 John 1:9 gives us an encouraging remedy. It says; “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Have you just gotten caught in sin? Do the consequences look grim? Rather than desperately promise you’ll be good, try saying very sincerely; “I’m sorry.”
