Looking Down the Line – Deuteronomy 7:9

Wake Up Call

Do you know who Jonathan Edwards is? Yes, perhaps you remember that he is the father of the “Great Awakening” – a revival in America in the late 1700s so powerful it is still recorded in American history textbooks today.

Perhaps you don’t know that Jonathan Edwards had eleven children with his wife, Sarah. Being a theologian, famous preacher and busy pastor, Edwards still kept his family a priority and spent a full hour each day totally devoted to his children. He didn’t just talk the talk; he walked the walk as we would say today.

What happens when children are raised in a godly way? The Bible says; “Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments” (Deuteronomy 7:9). Did the Edwards family qualify for this blessing? Indeed they did.

A study was done of 1,400 descendents of Jonathan and Sarah Edwards up until 1900 and it is a remarkable testimony to the good seeds they planted in their offspring. Their ranks include college presidents, lawyers and deans of colleges, judges, physicians, United States senators, mayors, writers, and ministers and missionaries by the troves.

What if you decide to cultivate Deuteronomy 7:9? You too can receive God’s lovingkindness to a thousand generations. Just as it has been for the Edwards family it can be for you too looking down the line.
