One Task

Wake Up Call

How many things can you do at one time? Supposedly women are better at multi-tasking than men but I’m not sure if that’s really true. I do know that necessity is the mother of invention and women sometimes have no choice but to becoming proficient multi-tasking machines.

I’ve found myself proud – almost bragging about those occasions when I was a Super Woman with the number of balls I could keep in the air. Yes, there are times I should have been nominated for the multi-tasking Oscar.

Why am I so proud? The Bible says nothing about giving points for how many tasks we can stuff into a day. God doesn’t seem to much care about multi-tasking. Rather, he says; “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). And again; “The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever” (Isaiah 32:17).

Are we really doing ourselves any favors by gaining proficiency in multi-tasking? Why not gain proficiency in quietly doing nothing except sit in God’s presence once in a while? Isn’t it God’s job to hold the universe together? “And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17).

It may be harder than ever before to slow ourselves down; we have become too good at the juggling. I say though, that’s the ONE TASK worthy.
