Promises, Promises, But Who Delivers? – John 8:44

Wake Up Call

I know someone who makes a lot of promises but has a very bad track record for delivering on them. In fact, I would say this one is batting ZERO in the promise department. He has lots of different names and titles but this describes him well: “‘He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature; for his is a liar, and the father of lies.'” (John 8:44)

Guess who? Satan, the devil, the enemy of our soul. What does he promise? Well, he promised Eve she would be like God if she ate the forbidden fruit and we know what she landed instead: expulsion from the Garden and a curse. He promises us that we can sin without consequences and be satisfied with worldly things that can never satisfy but will in fact destroy you.

On the other hand, who truly does deliver on promises? It is the one who said: “‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life.'” (John 14:6) Jesus Christ is the promise keeper – always.

Seems like a no brainer: believe the promise keeper, discard the promise breaker. So why do we ever listen to the one who is a liar and the father of lies? Perhaps we fail to discern to whom we are listening before we believe a promise.

Here’s a mighty and encouraging truth: if we listen only to the right one we will never have to face a broken promise!
