Creatures of Great Value – Jeremiah 29:11

Wake Up Call

Have you heard about maggot therapy? A friend just emailed me a news report about how this treatment for wounds is re-gaining support and acceptance by reputable doctors and hospitals throughout the US, Canada and worldwide. I say re-gaining because maggots were used extensively up until the 1940s to remove dead or damaged tissue and dirt from wounds. At that time, more “modern” (and I should say, probably more palatable) therapies and medicines took over. But it turns out they aren’t necessarily better.

Now it has been found that some wounds don’t respond to these “modern” techniques but they do respond to the old fashioned maggots. In fact, some wounds have been so resistant to conventional therapies that patients were left with few options outside of amputation. But in over 80% of these hard type cases, maggots did the job.

Would you ever have believed that something as “yucky” as maggots could have been made by God with a purpose? I wouldn’t. In my mind, maggots were disgusting – end of story. You can tell I would not have been the doctor who decided to try any maggot experiments. Leeches are another creature that emerges with a valid medical benefit and I’m sure there are plenty more that I don’t know about or are just awaiting discovery.

So it turns out that all of God’s creation is precious and filled with purpose and nothing or no one is inconsequential or insignificant. Not maggots. Not leeches. Okay, now let’s get real and mention the people who are sometimes devalued by society. Not the corner bag lady or the baby born profoundly retarded or the old person with dementia or the accident victim in a coma for years. Maybe God’s purposes are not clear to some of us but they are clear to him. If we only knew.

Finally, let’s mention any reader out there who feels they have about as much value as a maggot. Could there be a wonderful, noble purpose for your life? YES. There already is. You may not have discovered it yet but God is quite clear about it. Here is his view of the matter. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”(Jeremiah 29:11) Make it your view of the matter too!
