Abusive Relationship

Straight Talk

The Question

I have two kids, a boy and a girl. I am in an abusive relationship and I am on the verge of leaving. Financially, I have nothing but I am going to trust God on this one. I do not want my kids to continue to witness all this nonsense. The cycle has to be broken somehow. I have been seeking God’s face on this matter for years. I always say that I am waiting on God but maybe he is waiting on me. I don’t know what to expect out there on my own. What do you think?

The Answer
Part 1: Expect God’s Best

Expect God’s Best (Part 1)

I think you are making the right decision. You have stated several good points and I want to emphasize them back to you so you won’t forget the truth when the going gets rough.

Effect on children

Children are little sponges and they can and will absorb whatever is around them. If they see violence and abuse, they come to see that as normal and acceptable. Actually, abuse of any kind is not acceptable and should not be tolerated. By removing yourself and your children from this situation you are placing them in a better environment to absorb good and true and right things instead of this current poison.

Breaking the cycle

Most people who abuse others were themselves abused at some time in their life. This pattern can be broken and it must be broken or it will continue on into the next generation. By leaving the abuse, you are helping to break the cycle. Please don’t forget to pray over your children everyday, especially as they sleep at night. The blood of Jesus is sufficient to break every curse so plead the blood of Jesus over your family.

Trusting God

You are correct to trust God as you step out into the unknown. “For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is His name; and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; He is called the God of the whole earth.” (Isaiah 54:5) On a practical level you may need to seek help from your church, relatives or friends but ultimately it is God who is providing for you and all your needs. He will not fail you and this is a time to grow in faith as you find that out.

Waiting on God

There is always a balance in finding what part God plays and what part we play in the timing and activity of our life. Maybe God has been waiting for you to get sick and tired of what you have been enduring. Maybe you realize you should have left long ago but that is in the past now. The important thing is to step forth and not wait any longer. You do not deserve to be poorly treated. Psalm 139:14 says; “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Start believing that and start believing that God has a wonderful plan for you and for your children. What can you expect as you trust and obey God? Expect God’s best!
