Smart Like the Ant

Wake Up Call

The ant has a place of honor in scripture for being a wise creature. Proverbs 6:8 says; “it stores its provisions in the summer and gathers its food at harvest.” The passage is talking about not being lazy but working instead to be prepared for winter when provision will be scarce.

I see a spiritual correlation. What about being ready for a different kind of winter? Lately I have seen quite a few people who have been hit by disaster and who have nothing in reserve. I don’t mean financially. I mean they have no storehouse of spiritual sustenance to see them through when times are tough because they did not gather it when they could.

Ecclesiastes 7:14 says; “In the day of prosperity be happy, but in the day of adversity consider – God has made the one as well as the other.” That tells me that all of us will have days of prosperity and days of adversity. We need to expect a mixture in life but we don’t need to starve to death when adversity takes its turn.

What are the things we can do to build up the storehouse we will need? Consider daily prayer; reading and studying the Bible; participating in church and tending our relationship with the Lord each and every day. When we do these things we pile provision on our shelves for winter. Be smart like the ant. Winter is coming sooner or later.
