Attention To Detail – John 19:30

Wake Up Call

There is a little detail of the crucifixion story that is quite remarkable. You know that the last thing Jesus said on the cross was; “It is finished.” (John 19:30) Those three words are the most significant in all of history. The redemption of mankind was absolutely complete when Jesus bowed his head finally and gave up his spirit.

With the weight of the sin of the whole world literally on him, Jesus did something else very significant. He paused to take care of his mother. Those last moments before death must have been the most agonizing but he still looked down with compassion. “When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, ‘Woman, behold your son!’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold your mother!’ And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.” (John 19:26-27)

As a son, he was responsible for her; evidently her husband Joseph was dead or she would not have needed a home. Jesus entrusted her into the hands of his best, closest friend on earth; John. He gave them to each other in more than a simple care giving relationship; he called them to be mother and son. Tradition holds that they lived in Ephesus together to the end of their lives.

The next time you are too busy to stop and show some small kindness to someone, think about this story. The next time you think God is too busy running the universe to care about the details in your life; think about this story.
