I’ve made a pack with my daughters that they won’t let me get old in my thinking. They take it very seriously and constantly try to keep me up-to-date on fashion, hair styles and the latest in pop culture. In case I get behind they are quick to “help” me understand the error of my ways.

For instance, when I was shopping recently with one of them and pointed out the edge of some pants in a particular store I was told that those edges are “in” right now. I’m now the owner of two pairs with the right edges.

It’s great for me to stay up to date on current culture but there is a different application I want to be even more diligent about. I want to keep my mind open to new ideas in the spiritual arena. Proverbs 18:15 says; “The intelligent man is always open to new ideas. In fact, he looks for them.”

What is God up to now? It seems that in each new generation He shows up with fresh ways to present the gospel. There are always new musical styles to praise Him. There are improved ideas for how to do church. I don’t want my thinking to get old in any of these things.

I want to be like that intelligent man in Proverbs who is always open to new ideas. In fact, rather than be dragged along by others, I’m going to start looking for them.
