We are in the decade of diets. If they filled a time capsule right now to be opened in 100 years, wouldn’t it be appropriate to include samples of all the current diet books being touted today? Clearly, diet preoccupation is a reflection of our present culture. The food industry is a little confused over the whole thing. They aren’t sure which way to go in their advertising: Low Fat – Low Carb – or something new.
Foods are flip flopping back and forth between being “in” or “out” depending on what diet you are on. As they flip flop, so does our thinking about them as different foods become king or queen for a day and then are later rejected. If we are wise, we will be careful not to let this kind of thinking affect other areas of our life – especially our spiritual life.
We have an array of spiritual choices today like never before. Books, tapes, music, internet sites, talk shows, movies – many are espousing a spiritual message. One spiritual path comes into style for awhile and then something else comes along to overtake it.
Are all of these paths equal? No, I don’t think so. What we really want is the truth. When we finally locate the truth we have something precious indeed. Something that won’t go out of style or change over time – something worth sticking with and living by.
Jesus said; “If you hold to my teachings, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31) Examine all the various spiritual diets that are out in light of these words. That way, we will make sure we are on the right diet, the one that sets us free!
