If you read the Wake Up Call daily you have probably noticed that the last several days have all been titled, “Heart of …” Today is the final devotional in the heart series which is in honor of Heart month and Valentine’s Day.
The heart is the center of our being; the place where our emotions, thinking and personality all converge. We say, “My heart goes out to you”, “I love you with all my heart”, “Let’s get to the heart of the matter” and “What does your heart say about that?” When we reveal our heart we are revealing our secret self.
God makes no secret of his real self; he reveals himself fully to us as the one with the heart of love. His love is so pure, full, rich and complete that sometimes it just does not compute with us. We have heard so many times the scripture in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son…” that it no longer penetrates the deep places in our own heart.
Maybe if we consider whether we could do the same as God, it would become more real to us. For instance, would we offer our only child as an exchange to take the punishment of the worst criminal now on death row so that criminal could go free? No way, we say. But God, with the heart of love, said yes to that great exchange as Jesus took the place of every person and every sin.
One with such a heart of love is worthy of every nook and cranny of ours. If you have never done so, today would be an appropriate day to give your heart of love back to God. Happy Valentine’s Day!
