Blessings for the Asking

Wake Up Call

Blessings abound in our lives. The day of our birth was a day of great blessing to our parents and to us – new life! We don’t ask for air to breathe; it is just there. We see the beauty of creation and it shines forth whether we acknowledge it or not. Every day is stuffed full of “freebies” in the blessing line.

That’s great but would you like more? There are additional blessings for the taking but we have to ask for them. A lady named Achsah in the Bible took full advantage. Of course, I think she came by her feistiness naturally because she was the daughter of that great warrior Caleb.

After Caleb took possession of the portion of the Promised Land assigned to him he promised his daughter in marriage to the man who would capture a particular city. Othniel took the challenge and got a new wife and together they received their land. It was quite a good inheritance but Achsah pushed further.

She went to her father and said; “‘Give me a blessing; since you have given me the land of the Negev, give me also springs of water.'” (Joshua 15:19) Some might see her as pushy or greedy but her father didn’t see it that way. He was delighted; he could see that the apple hadn’t fallen far from his tree.

The Bible says “So he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.” She got more because she asked for more. We should follow her example. Be grateful for every single blessing you have and thank God every day. Then go beyond. There are plenty more blessings there for the asking.
